Adam Smalley narrowly misses out on his maiden overall podium in Ginetta Juniors at Thruxton
Adam Smalley showed an impressive turn in pace at the high speed Thruxton circuit as he came within a couple of laps of taking his first overall podium in the Ginetta Junior Championship.
Smalley set the 8th fastest time in qualifying, with his second best lap being good enough for 7th overall - meaning he would start from the fourth row in both of his races.
The slipstream was essential for a fast time at Thruxton with so much time spent at full throttle - and this would have a bearing on how close the racing was throughout the weekend.
Smalley made a good start in race one and held his position through all the jostling on the opening laps. He settled down into a rhythmn, setting a front running pace, as he gained two positions to finish in 6th position - claiming 2nd overall in the Rookie Class.
The second race of the weekend saw Smalley make a brilliant start, showing a much developed race craft as he scythed through the field in the early stages of the race. The JHR Developments youngster rose as high as 3rd, knocking on the door of his first podium. With just a handful of laps to go, and in a five car train for third position - Smalley was determined to take the initiative on the podium. He made a bold move on rival Harry King for third around the high-speed 'Church' corner. With both cars on the edge, Smalley was unlucky to lose the car and slide off, dropping back to the rear of the field. He would finish the race in 17th position, in a race that deserved more for the Ginetta Scholarship winner!
Despite the setback, it was clear to see the progress Smalley has made in just his third ever car racing meeting - and he is not afraid of giving it a go for the major positions!
The third round of the championship for races 8/9/10 takes place on the 20-21 May at Oulton Park - Smalley's local circuit!
