The weekend kicked off with qualifying which saw Smalley putting the 3rd fastest time overall. He lined up 3rd on the grid for race one and made a great start moving into 2nd place before the first corner. He got onto the back of the leader but an early safety car halted his chances. Smalley initially lost ground on the safety car restart but with 8 laps remaining he hunted down the leader. There wasn’t quite long enough for him to make a challenge for the lead as he crossed the line in 2ndplace to take his third podium of the season in four races.
The second race of the weekend was held on Saturday evening. Smalley lined up 2nd on the grid and immediately challenged for the race lead. It was neck and neck going into the first corner but he made a bold move around the outside to take the lead of the race going into Druids. From there on in, he got his head down and led all 24 laps of the race before going on to take the victory. His 3rd win of the season meant that he took the championship lead despite a DNF last time out at Snetterton.
The final race of the weekend took place on Sunday afternoon. Smalley lined up 5th for the reverse grid race after drawing number5 out of the hat following his win in race two. It was always going to be a challenging race as several cars around him were on better tyres. He dropped down a couple of places at the start of the race but soon fought back and crossed the line in 5th place. A fantastic result, especially against those on fresher tyres.
It was a great weekend for Smalley which saw him take another victory as well as taking the championship lead. The Ginetta GT4 Supercup heads into a 5-week break, before returning to action on the 31 July/ 1 August at Oulton Park for round 3 of the championship.
